The problem comes when you need to see detail like in your case at distances beyond 16-20 feet. A vari-focal lens allows you to change the feild of view of what you see. If you want to focus on an object farther away then you have to manually adjust the lens. Be aware that you will be narrowing what you see to the left and right of the object. If you have fixed focus lenses then your options are very limited. You will either have to move the camera closer to what you want to protect or purchase a different camera. Other factors that could be an issue for you is if you are recording to a VCR. A VCR can only record at about 350 lines of resolution even if you have a high resolution camera say around 480 lines. You could switch to a digital video recorder (DVR) DVR’s record video at a much higher resolution and the quality will not detoriate over time like a VCR.
I have a camera system and need to make these CCTV video more clear As it is now I can’t see their features clearly.
CCTV Guide Says:
Unfortunately there’s not much you can do at this point. If the quality of your security cameras is such that it can’t get prosecuteable evidence you may have to re-evaluate your camera system.
Most camera systems use wide angle lenses. This allows you to cover a large area.
If your cameras have a C mount CCD lens then your good to go. All you have to do is change it to a vari-focal lens.
Here’s an example of what a DVR looks like
